Duty First · Officium Primo
St. Joseph's College stands among Sri Lanka's most enduring institutions — a national school in the sacred city of Anuradhapura, where more than thirty thousand young men have been formed in mind, character, and service since 1898.
In 1898, in a town better known for its sacred ruins than its schools, the Catholic Mission opened a small institution by the Bulankulama road. From that humble beginning, St. Joseph's grew — through colonial days, through independence, through the long years of national upheaval — into one of the most respected schools in the North Central Province.
The college is more than a building of brick and timber — it is the second home in which a boy's character is formed. We ask our students to belong to it deeply, and to carry it with them always.
Education without gratitude is hollow. The Joseph's boy is taught, first and foremost, to honour those who raised him — and the family that stands behind every uniform.
We educate young men not for themselves alone, but for Sri Lanka. Service to one's country is the highest expression of duty — and duty, here, is everything.
From classical letters to applied technology, our Advanced Level streams prepare each student for university and the world beyond.
Our digital LMS gives every enrolled student round-the-clock access to lesson materials, recorded classes, and self-study resources — bridging the gap between classroom and home.
More than twenty thousand volumes — old and new, English, Sinhala and Tamil — across every subject we teach and many we do not. By tradition, the quietest room on the campus.
The pride of the eastern grounds — a competition-grade facility that has trained district and national-level swimmers across three generations of Joseph's boys.
Cricket pitch, rugby paddock, football field and athletics track — laid out across the western perimeter, and tended by the same groundsman for the better part of two decades.
The college keeps both Buddhist and Catholic traditions, side by side. Vesak and Christmas alike are observed on the grounds — a quiet, daily rebuke to the idea that faith must divide.
Three dedicated laboratories — biology, chemistry, physics — equipped, stocked and staffed for practical work at A/L standard. The smell of Bunsen-burner gas remains, as ever, unchanged.
Built and maintained by our own ICT Society, the Joseph's Portal is the school's complete management application — used daily by students, teachers, parents, and the office. Attendance, marks, ID cards with QR check-in, timetables, mail, events — all in one place.
A handful of plates from the school photographer — campus, ceremony, and the boys at their work.
Tenders, recruitment notices, and admissions information — issued in the order they appeared on the staff-room board.
For admissions, alumni inquiries, or simply to ask after the school — the principal's office answers most letters within a working day.
